Flickr Extends Deadline for Free Account Photo Deletion: What You Need to Know

Discover why Flickr postponed deleting photos from free accounts and how to securely back up your images before the new deadline.

Downloading archives limited to 500 photos at a time can be frustratingly slow, especially when your collection exceeds tens of thousands of images.

SmugMug, the company that acquired Flickr from Yahoo, has announced a new deadline for removing photos from free accounts, extending it until March 12. This change comes after users expressed concerns about the restrictive download limits.

Previously, Flickr allowed users to download photos only in ZIP archives containing up to 500 images at once. For many, this was insufficient, particularly for those who automatically synced their phone photos to the platform. For example, a journalist from USA Today had over 50,000 photos in her account. While Flickr offers an option to download all photos in a single archive, generating this file can take several hours.

Flickr originally provided users with 1 terabyte of free storage. However, after SmugMug took ownership, the free storage was reduced to a limit of 1,000 photos. If you still use Flickr and haven't backed up your photos to your computer, it's highly recommended to do so promptly to avoid losing your valuable memories.
