Starting February 2019, Flickr will begin a significant cleanup of photos from free accounts.
In April, SmugMug acquired Flickr from Yahoo!, and the new management announced that beginning February 2019, they will start removing photos from free accounts on a large scale.
This change is due to a new limit on the number of photos allowed on free accounts, capped at 1,000 images. From January 8, free account holders will no longer be able to upload new content. Then, starting February 5, SmugMug will begin deleting excess photos, starting with the oldest ones.
To enjoy unlimited storage, users will need to subscribe to Flickr Pro for $6 per month or $50 per year. The subscription also removes ads from the site, extends the maximum video upload length from 3 to 10 minutes, and provides discounts on partner products such as Adobe. Until November 30, the annual subscription is available with a 30% discount.
How to Save Your Photos
- Log into your Flickr account and navigate to the Camera Roll section.
- Select the photos you want to download and click the Download button at the bottom of the page.
- The service will prepare a photo archive and send you a notification with a download link. If you have many photos, please be patient as this process may take some time.
You can download up to 500 photos at a time. If you have more, consider downloading entire albums after organizing your photos. Each album can hold up to 5,000 images.
