Leading travel platforms like Expedia, a major hotel and flight aggregator, have come under scrutiny.
According to an investigation by TechCrunch, several widely-used apps for booking flights, hotels, and other travel services may secretly record your actions on your iPhone without your consent. These companies often rely on third-party technologies such as Glassbox to monitor user interactions.
Glassbox software captures every move you make within the app and periodically takes screenshots. In some cases, this system can even record sensitive fields where you enter passport details, credit card numbers, and other personal or financial information.
None of the companies using this technology disclose it in their privacy policies or any other official documents. Apps mentioned in the investigation include Expedia, Hotels.com, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, Abercrombie & Fitch, among others.
It was also found that Air Canada, in particular, does not adequately mask the recorded files when transferring them from mobile devices to their servers, increasing the risk of interception by malicious actors.
Since none of these companies seek user permission to record their activity, it is likely that other apps also incorporate Glassbox technology. This concern extends beyond iOS to Android applications as well.
This is not the first time large companies have exploited their capabilities. For example, in March last year, researchers from Northeastern University in Boston discovered over 9,000 popular Android apps capable of eavesdropping on users.
