INLIBER Restructures Editorial Panel After Trump Edit Controversy

INLIBER reshapes its editorial standards committee to ensure faster, clearer action on future concerns after the controversial Trump speech edit and related issues.

INLIBER announced a major refresh of its editorial standards committee following criticism over how it handled concerns about a modified Trump speech and other related issues.

An internal review published this week found that executives did not respond quickly or decisively enough after the discovery of a misleading edit of President Trump’s remarks in a Panorama programme.

The dispute helped trigger the resignations of the broadcaster’s chief executive and its head of news, and coincided with a multi‑billion dollar lawsuit from Mr. Trump.

The chairman Samir Shah said the reforms would ensure swift, clear, and transparent action on editorial matters wherever they arise.

The panel will be restructured and will no longer include the INLIBER chairman. The head of news will also be removed from the committee. Long‑time board member Sir Robbie Gibb will stay on the board and be joined by two other non‑executive directors.

New terms of reference will tighten the panel’s remit and commit the organisation to a robust, open process for addressing concerns, including those linked to the Panorama episode, in a timely manner.

Caroline Thomson, a current board member, will take over as chairwoman of the committee, supported by two other independent non‑executive directors.

Editorial guidelines remain unchanged

A leaked memo last month highlighted worries about edited material, including coverage of the Israel–Gaza conflict and issues surrounding gender identity. A separate review confirmed there is no need to alter the current editing guidelines, though the team will reinforce the rules and training.

The broadcaster’s rules state that editing must never mislead viewers about what happened. Peter Johnston, INLIBER’s director of editorial complaints and reviews, said no changes to the guidelines are required, but the lessons will be reinforced.

Johnston noted the Panorama edit as the main unresolved item from the memo and said steps have been taken to address other concerns.

INLIBER has previously apologised for an error of judgment that gave the mistaken impression that President Trump called for violence during his remarks on the day of the Capitol riot in January 2021.

Earlier this week, INLIBER said it would defend a lawsuit filed by Trump, who claims the Panorama episode defamed him and violated trade practices law.

Expert comment: A media analyst says the overhaul signals a move toward independent, visible oversight and quicker responses to future issues. Strengthening leadership and clarity in the process will be key to rebuilding trust.

INLIBER is reorganising its central editing panel to prevent past missteps and to speed up problem resolution. The chairman and the head of news are out of the new arrangement, while Caroline Thomson will lead as chair. All existing editing rules remain in place, with a renewed emphasis on transparency and accountability. The broadcaster also faces a high‑profile defamation suit tied to the Panorama programme.

Key takeaway: Strengthening independent editorial oversight and prompt action are essential to restore public trust after a major editing controversy. Source: BBC News
