Beware of These Android Apps That Stole User Photos and Were Removed from Google Play

Check your device for these suspicious apps that have been removed from Google Play due to privacy violations and malware risks.

Some of these apps had over a million downloads.

Google recently removed 29 similar Android applications from its official content store. These apps, which claimed to enhance photo quality, were found to be stealing users' photos. The stolen images could potentially be used to create fake accounts.

Additionally, many of these apps aggressively displayed full-screen ads, secretly downloaded malicious code disguised as updates, and attempted to extort money through inappropriate banners. Even after making payments, users found their devices remained locked.

Many users were tricked by in-app contests that asked for personal information to claim prizes. In reality, no rewards existed, winners were fabricated, and personal data was leaked to unknown destinations.

Digital security company Trend Micro uncovered this threat. According to their findings, the most popular malicious apps included Cartoon Art Photo, Pro Beauty Camera, and Emoji Camera, each with over a million downloads.

Once installed, these apps were difficult to remove. They could hide within the list of installed programs, and some had no icons on the home screen, making detection harder.

All 29 apps have now been permanently removed from Google Play. If you recently downloaded similar apps, it’s important to check their availability in the store. If they’re no longer listed, consider uninstalling them immediately.

To avoid falling victim to such scams in the future, always carefully review user feedback and ratings before downloading unfamiliar apps.
