Cybersecurity specialists from Bitdefender have identified several malicious apps masquerading as popular services. These include a fake VLC media player, a counterfeit Kaspersky Antivirus, and fraudulent clients posing as FedEx and DHL apps, according to reports from TechRadar.
Once installed, these apps infect devices with two dangerous banking trojans: Teabot and Flubot. Teabot intercepts messages and Google authentication codes, logs keystrokes, executes overlay attacks, and can even take full control of the device. Flubot is equipped to steal banking credentials, messages, and other sensitive information.
Although these malicious programs are not available on Google Play, they are widely distributed through various other websites where users often download APK files for apps they need. These threats are frequently disguised as the "latest versions" of well-known applications that have not yet been officially released on the Android store.
Bitdefender experts strongly advise against downloading apps outside of Google Play. Every new software version should undergo Google’s verification process, which is usually effective at detecting fraudulent applications and protecting users from cyber threats.
