Juan Ayuso of Spain claimed victory in stage 12 of the Vuelta a España, while Jonas Vingegaard preserved his overall lead.

At 22 years old, Ayuso out-sprinted fellow Spaniard Javier Romo in a breakaway finish after a 144.9km route from Laredo to Los Corrales de Buelna. France’s Brieuc Rolland completed the podium, crossing 13 seconds behind.

Romo and Ayuso broke clear on the final climb about 26km from the finish. Ayuso timed his effort perfectly, saying he played the tactics “smart” to secure his second stage win of the race.

Vingegaard arrived over six minutes later, supported by his Visma-Lease a Bike teammates, maintaining his 50-second advantage over Joao Almeida in second place on the general classification.
