Vuelta a España stage 15 disrupted by protester as Mads Pedersen wins; Vingegaard maintains lead
A pro-Palestinian protester caused a minor crash on stage 15 of the Vuelta a España, but Mads Pedersen claimed victory while Jonas Vingegaard kept the overall lead.
A pro-Palestinian protester forced a minor crash with 56km remaining on stage 15 of the Vuelta a España, but Mads Pedersen emerged victorious while Jonas Vingegaard retained the overall lead.
During the 167.8km run from A Veiga to Monforte de Lemos, an individual carrying a Palestinian flag stumbled onto a grassy verge near Castroverde, disrupting a leading group of riders. Spain’s Javier Romo was the worst affected but rejoined and finished the stage.
Protesters also displayed flags at the start and finish lines, and police intervened near Ribadeo to prevent further incidents. Earlier, stage 11 was neutralised due to protests, and the Israel-Premier Tech team raced in plain jerseys.
Pedersen seizes the stage
Riding for Lidl-Trek, Pedersen launched a powerful sprint on the home straight to claim his first win of this year’s race in 4hrs 2mins 13secs. He overtook Italy’s Marco Frigo in the final 200m, with Venezuela’s Orluis Aular finishing second.
“The team worked tirelessly to set me up,” Pedersen said. “When Frigo launched his lead-out, I timed my sprint perfectly.” The main peloton, including Vingegaard and other GC contenders, crossed the line 13½ minutes later.
