Uncovering a Shocking Makeover Show That Stirred Controversy Online

Discover the surprising revival of a makeover show that shocked viewers with its harsh transformations and sparked widespread debate about its approach to self-image and empowerment.

Following the surge in popularity of culinary masterpieces from the show "Let's Eat at Home!", social media users unexpectedly recalled the makeover series "Take This Off Immediately!", known not only for transforming women but also for its often harsh criticism.

Just over a year ago, online discussions revolved not only around new TV series or celebrity survival shows but also revisited archived episodes of a program hosted by the acclaimed Russian actress Yulia Vysotskaya. For two decades, she has been the face of the cooking show "Let's Eat at Home!" on NTV. Surprisingly, after all these years, the star's culinary skills faced sharp criticism, a topic previously overlooked by audiences.

Videos showcasing unsuccessful recipes by Yulia circulated widely online, leading to memes and jokes that escalated into a major scandal. Some celebrities defended her, while others suggested she should stop embarrassing herself, claiming she never truly mastered cooking.

Months later, the public's attention shifted from culinary mishaps like runny cheesecakes and odd fish recipes to other nostalgic shows. Currently, the spotlight is on the trendy early-2000s makeover program "Take This Off Immediately!".

In the summer of 2024, the STS channel aired the 250th anniversary episode of the program, which originally premiered on September 5, 2004. Upon its debut, many criticized the hosts for their harsh treatment of participants—women facing difficult life circumstances seeking help. Almost every episode featured women so overwhelmed by their struggles that they neglected self-care.

The creators aimed to redefine the Russian woman by bringing her down to earth through shock therapy. To achieve this, they employed a controversial approach. Experience showed that gentle encouragement from friends rarely sparks drastic image changes, so when close acquaintances of participants approached hosts Natasha Stefanenko and Tasha Stroga, they adopted a strict "tough cop" persona.

Modern audiences have expressed disapproval of this format, sharing numerous clips of transformations that sparked outrage. In one episode, a participant subtly indicated dissatisfaction with her new look, to which the hosts replied, "You just don't understand yet."

While the stylistic choices of Natasha and Tasha can be excused given the show's age, the harsh communication with participants remains unacceptable. For instance, in one clip, a voiceover tells a 27-year-old mother of two that if she doesn't start taking care of herself, her husband will find someone else. It emphasizes urgency, noting the husband is already working late and reluctant to return home to an "unattractive" wife.

"There was also a moment where they discussed the participant's body while she stood in lingerie. The hosts pointed out areas of cellulite and stretch marks. Even back then, that felt unsettling to me."

"It's generally unpleasant. Plus, with a large film crew and the show airing on TV, participants would likely need psychological support for years afterward to cope with the stress."

"It's heartbreaking; I genuinely feel for the participants."

"Poor women... After such humiliation from family and hosts, no therapist can help them truly love themselves."

"The funniest part is that in some episodes, the hosts looked worse than the participants themselves."

"I loved this show as a child and never missed an episode. Back then, the hosts' remarks seemed normal and appropriate. Now, I genuinely feel sorry for the participants, many of whom were clearly humiliated," users write online.
