Sudan Army Accused of Torturing Detainees to Death, Rights Group Says

The Emergency Lawyers group accuses Sudan’s army of operating execution chambers and torturing detainees to death in Khartoum, amid the conflict with the RSF.

A leading human rights group, Emergency Lawyers, says Sudan’s army and security forces have been torturing detainees to death and run "execution chambers" in Khartoum.

The group has recorded hundreds of arrests since the army retook the capital from the RSF in March. In severe cases, detainees were later found dead with clear signs of torture.

Atrocity Reports

Emergency Lawyers said random arrests have led to mass detention centres, where captives face harsh conditions and trials lacking basic justice standards.

  • Continued detention in inhumane settings
  • Trials by security agencies without due process
  • Release of detainees in critical health

"In the worst cases, some are found dead after being tortured," the group said on platform X.

Wider Conflict Abuses

Since the conflict began two years ago, both the army and RSF have been accused of torture, arbitrary detention and sexual violence. A UN fact-finding mission in March confirmed widespread abuses by both sides.

The war has triggered one of the worst humanitarian crises globally: over 12 million displaced and famine declared in parts of Sudan.

Doctors Without Borders reports this war has sparked the country’s largest cholera outbreak in years, with nearly 100,000 cases and 2,470 deaths in the past year.
