Irish author Sally Rooney vows to use her platform and earnings to back Palestine Action even if it means being labelled a terrorist supporter under UK law.
Novelist Sally Rooney has declared she will continue supporting Palestine Action, despite its proscription as a terrorist organisation by the UK government in July.
Writing in the Irish Times, the author of Normal People said she plans to dedicate her book earnings and public platform to "direct action against genocide", adding, "if this makes me a supporter of terror under UK law, so be it".
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has defended the ban, describing Palestine Action as more than a protest group known for stunts. The organisation has mainly targeted arms companies since the Gaza war began, with incidents including the vandalism of RAF Brize Norton aircraft and actions against Elbit Systems UK.
Rooney, who previously refused to allow translation of Beautiful World, Where Are You into Hebrew in protest of Israel’s policies, said the UK government has eroded civil rights and free expression to maintain ties with Israel. More than 700 arrests have been made under the ban.
