However, VAR overturned the goal after finding a Palace player less than one metre from Chelsea’s defensive wall.
Referee Darren England said: “After review, away number six is less than one metre away from the wall as the shot is taken. Therefore, it’s an indirect free-kick and a disallowed goal.”
The International Football Association Board’s Law 13, introduced in 2019, requires attackers to stay at least one metre from a defensive wall of three or more players until the ball is in play, preventing tactical encroachment and time-wasting.
Eze’s free-kick was disallowed due to an attacker encroaching on the defensive wall, breaching IFAB’s one-metre rule.
