Amberley Museum bridges vintage Telex and ChatGPT for unique dialogue
Visitors at Amberley Museum in West Sussex can now interact with ChatGPT through a restored 50-year-old Telex machine, blending past and present communication technologies.
At Amberley Museum in West Sussex, historians have linked a 50-year-old Telex machine to modern artificial intelligence, creating conversations that span decades.
The Telex system once transmitted typed messages directly from one machine to another, delivering printed text to the recipient. Now, instead of a distant human operator, visitors receive replies generated by ChatGPT.
Built through the ingenuity of volunteer David Waters, the restored Telex machine allows guests to type questions via the rotary dial and print answers on the spot, merging analogue charm with AI innovation.
A museum spokesperson said, "The experience begins by using a rotary dial to establish the connection, creating an unforgettable meeting between communication technologies separated by half a century."
They added, "This project perfectly captures the spirit of Amberley Museum—honoring our technological past while engaging with today’s innovations. It's truly a conversation across decades."

This interactive Telex-to-ChatGPT setup showcases how historical communication devices can be revitalized through today’s AI, offering museum visitors a bridge between past and present.
