Nigeria's military said it killed 35 jihadists in four air strikes near the country's north-eastern border with Cameroon. The operations aimed to disrupt a planned assault on ground forces and followed months of escalating militant activity in the region.
For over a decade, Nigeria has fought Islamist insurgents alongside criminal gangs, sectarian conflicts and widespread kidnappings. In May, Amnesty International reported more than 10,000 deaths since President Bola Tinubu took office two years ago.
A coalition of former ministers, business leaders and activists warned of "war-time levels of slaughter" in parts of Nigeria, calling on the president to establish a task force with broad powers to tackle violence, including a resurgence of Boko Haram.
Last week, the army claimed to have killed nearly 600 militants in the region over eight months, though independent verification is lacking. The Air Force stated it will continue air support for ground troops dismantling jihadist bases.
