Newcastle United are closing in on the £34.6m signing of AC Milan centre-back Malick Thiaw.

The 24-year-old Germany international is expected to fly to Tyneside on Sunday evening to complete his move to St James’ Park.

After missing out on several targets this summer—including Benjamin Sesko, Hugo Ekitike, João Pedro, and James Trafford—Thiaw has emerged as Newcastle’s priority defensive addition.

He will undergo a medical before finalizing a deal reportedly worth up to €40m, including add-ons.

Manager Eddie Howe identified strengthening the centre-back position as a key summer objective to boost competition and reduce the squad’s average age.
