42 Positive Tests: Man Battled COVID-19 for Nearly a Year
A 72-year-old retired instructor fought COVID-19 for almost a year, overcoming severe health challenges and finally celebrating his recovery.
A 72-year-old retired man was bedridden for an extended period. Neither his wife nor the medical team believed his condition would improve. Yet, after nearly a year of battling, the British man triumphed over the severe illness and joyfully celebrated his recovery.
We are all warned that seniors and cancer patients belong to high-risk groups, with COVID-19 infections potentially leading to serious complications or even fatal outcomes for the elderly. Consequently, responsible family members encourage their oldest relatives to avoid crowded places and get vaccinated promptly. However, the unpredictable pandemic can catch even the most cautious off guard despite all preventive measures.
Such was the case for Dave Smith, a 72-year-old retired driving instructor from Bristol, England, who suddenly experienced a decline in health. Knowing he had blood cancer, he initially attributed his symptoms to chemotherapy side effects. However, Western media later reported that he had contracted COVID-19.
He revealed that his health sometimes worsened so severely that his desperate wife, Linda, warned relatives five times to prepare for his funeral. Dave rapidly lost weight, dropping from 258 to 139 pounds (117 to 63 kilograms). The illness was unpredictable, with his condition fluctuating between better and worse. Consequently, the couple was confined to their home throughout this period. Dave remained bedridden and constantly suffered from sleep deprivation.
Eventually, doctors prioritized him for vaccination. Gradually, Dave regained strength and was able to move independently again. After 45 days, he finally received a negative COVID-19 test result.

In total, Dave battled COVID-19 for a record-breaking 10 months (290 days) since March 2020, undergoing over forty coronavirus tests during his illness. Only after 42 positive results did both the medical team and Dave himself believe he had truly overcome the severe infection.
"We even opened a bottle of champagne we had kept in the cupboard since we usually don't drink, and shared it between us. After that, we started calling all our friends to share the joyful news that I finally tested negative!" Dave told reporters.
Similar to Dave’s case, many people with prolonged COVID-19 infections exhibit low levels of virus-neutralizing antibodies. This often occurs due to recent cancer treatments or hereditary factors that impair the body's antibody-producing cells.
