Unveiling Ancient Secrets: Discovery of 59 Untouched Sarcophagi with Mummies in Egypt

Egyptian archaeologists have made a groundbreaking discovery of 59 untouched sarcophagi containing mummies in the ancient necropolis of Saqqara, revealing remarkable insights into ancient Egyptian civilization.

For over 2,600 years, these sarcophagi remained undisturbed in one of the world's oldest necropolises.

Recently, Egyptian archaeologists announced one of the most significant finds in recent history: 59 pristine sarcophagi with mummies were uncovered in Saqqara. During a public unveiling attended by numerous journalists, one sarcophagus was carefully opened, revealing a mummy wrapped meticulously in burial linens, adorned with vibrant hieroglyphic inscriptions.

According to the Ministry of Antiquities, the remains date back more than 2,600 years and have remained untouched since their original burial.

The sarcophagi were found near the renowned Step Pyramid of Djoser, the oldest large-scale stone structure in the world. This pyramid was constructed by the architect Imhotep in Saqqara to serve as the burial site for Pharaoh Djoser around 2650 BCE.

Footage released by the Ministry showcased the vividly decorated sarcophagi, embellished with ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. Additionally, two deep shafts revealed well-preserved artifacts and at least 28 ancient statues.

A sealed door was also discovered, which is believed to potentially conceal more mummies, according to Khaled El-Anani, Egypt's Minister of Antiquities and Tourism.

This discovery is being compared in scale and significance to the unearthing of King Tutankhamun's tomb, as both sites were found largely intact.

Experts believe this could mark the beginning of a major archaeological breakthrough. Saqqara, the ancient necropolis of the Old Kingdom capital Memphis, may still hold many more secrets waiting to be uncovered.
