Researchers collected air samples at various altitudes ranging from 10 meters up to over 2,000 meters above sea level. Their analyses showed that between 91.8% and 99.9% of bacteria in these samples originated from marine sources. The presence of bacteria from other regions was attributed to natural atmospheric circulation. Importantly, no traces of fuel, fertilizers, or waste were detected in these clouds.
This discovery is remarkable, especially considering that human activity has left its mark even in the most remote corners of the world—pollution is found not only in oceans but also on beaches and within wildlife. Yet, the clouds over the Southern Ocean remain largely untouched, situated far from human habitats, allowing them to avoid contamination.
