Building on this success, Google recently revisited this approach using far superior images from the Landsat 8 satellite, operated by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey. These newer satellite images, taken in 2013, benefit from cutting-edge technology, resulting in incredibly detailed and high-resolution visuals.
The updated satellite images were produced by processing an astounding one petabyte of data (equivalent to 1,024 terabytes). This amounts to over 700 trillion pixels—approximately 7,000 times the number of stars in the Milky Way galaxy.
These impressive figures highlight the extraordinary effort and results achieved. Now, Google Maps and Google Earth offer visuals that are significantly sharper and more vivid than ever before, allowing users to explore even the tiniest details on Earth's surface with remarkable clarity.
