Google Maps Now Offers Aerial Views of Landmarks for an Immersive Experience

Google has introduced an innovative immersive mode in Google Maps. When available, location cards will feature AI-generated videos showcasing architectural landmarks from aerial perspectives. Although these videos initially appear as standard photos, users will need to experiment to find which landmarks support this exciting new feature.

Designed primarily for travelers, this mode helps you understand what makes a site worth visiting or waiting in line for. It also offers a perfect way to satisfy your curiosity and admire architectural marvels without leaving home.

The realistic 3D models are created using advanced artificial intelligence that analyzes billions of photos and satellite images. From this data, Google generates videos that display the landmark from multiple angles. However, unlike Street View, users cannot manually rotate the camera.

Initially, this feature is available for 100 landmarks across Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo, including famous sites like Big Ben, Alcatraz, and the Empire State Building. Google plans to expand this list over time.

Alongside the aerial view mode, Google Maps has also launched several new features:

• Enhanced cycling navigation: alerts about heavy traffic, stairs, and road types to help cyclists distinguish between major highways and pedestrian paths.
• Arrival notifications: alerts when a friend sharing their location with you reaches a specified destination. Google emphasizes reminding users about active location sharing to ensure privacy awareness.

This new immersive mode and additional features are rolling out globally on Google Maps for both iOS and Android devices. If you don’t see the update yet, it may take a few days to become available.
