According to ComScore's report, the vast majority of iOS users rely on the default Apple Maps app, despite some opinions labeling it as less refined compared to Google Maps.
The release of Google Maps as a standalone app on iOS has not reversed this trend. Apple Maps have significantly impacted Google’s navigation service. A year ago, data from The Guardian showed that out of 103.6 million selected iOS and Android users, 81.1 million used Google’s solution. Now, even with an increased user base of 136.7 million, only 58.7 million continue to use Google Maps. This means Google Maps usage has dropped from 78% to just 43% among iOS and Android owners.
Google Maps usage on iOS peaked last September with 35 million users but has since declined to 6.3 million today.
ComScore data also reveals that users interact more frequently with Apple Maps—9.7 million iOS users compared to 7.2 million Android users of Google Maps—and spend more time on Apple’s app, averaging 75.5 minutes per month versus Google Maps’ 56.2 minutes.
Although many considered the launch of Apple Maps a misstep, Apple has been actively enhancing its mapping technology. Strategic acquisitions of startups like Locationary, HotStop, Embark, and WiFiSLAM have contributed to these improvements. Additionally, Apple integrated Maps into the desktop OS X 10.9 Mavericks, underscoring its strategic importance.
These enhancements come at a crucial time, as Apple prepares to expand its "iOS in the Car" initiative, where navigation software plays a pivotal role. We can expect ongoing improvements tailored to various regions worldwide.
