Uncovering Ancient Secrets: Rare Papyrus and Hundreds of Sarcophagi Discovered in Egypt

Explore the remarkable archaeological discovery in Egypt featuring a sealed papyrus from the Book of the Dead and 250 vividly painted sarcophagi, shedding new light on ancient Egyptian rituals and beliefs.

A groundbreaking archaeological discovery promises to enrich the collection of the Grand Egyptian Museum with extraordinary artifacts from Egypt's distant past.

Researchers have announced the unearthing of an ancient burial site in the Saqqara necropolis, revealing a trove of artifacts including mummies and bronze statues dating back approximately 2,500 years.

Mustafa Waziri, Secretary-General of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, highlighted the discovery of 250 vibrantly painted sarcophagi, each containing remarkably well-preserved mummies.

Among these, archaeologists found a wooden sarcophagus housing a fully intact sealed papyrus for the first time. This precious document is believed to contain chapters from the Book of Gates and the Book of the Dead. It has been transferred to the museum for detailed examination.

Excavations also uncovered ritual tools and 150 bronze statues representing Egyptian deities from the Late Period of Ancient Egypt, around 500 BCE. Many of these statues depict gods such as Anubis, Amun, Min, Osiris, and Isis.

Of particular interest to researchers was a hidden cache dating back to the New Kingdom era, approximately the 15th century BCE. This treasure trove included a bronze mirror, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and anklets.

Following comprehensive analysis, all discovered items will be exhibited at the Grand Egyptian Museum, currently under construction near the Great Pyramids of Giza, with an anticipated opening later this year.

The Egyptian government hopes that a surge in such archaeological finds will revitalize the tourism sector, which has suffered significantly in recent years due to political instability and the global COVID-19 pandemic. The influx of international visitors is eagerly anticipated to boost the nation's economy.
