The Fictional Tragic Fate of Suleiman's Daughter Crafted for 'Magnificent Century'

Fans of Turkish dramas anxiously followed the story of Sultan Suleiman's only daughter. However, the real-life fate of Mihrimah was far from tragic as portrayed in the series.

Enthusiasts of Turkish TV shows eagerly tracked the journey of Sultan Suleiman's sole daughter. Contrary to the series' portrayal, Mihrimah's real life was not as sorrowful as depicted.

The series "Magnificent Century" has been broadcast on the ZAMONA channel for several consecutive years. Loyal viewers have rewatched the dramatic saga multiple times.

However, few realize that many scenes in the series diverge significantly from historical reality.

Mihrimah, the daughter of Sultan Suleiman, first appears in episode 11 of the first season. Throughout the episodes, fans witness her growth and empathize with her portrayed tragic love story. In truth, Mihrimah's life unfolded quite differently than shown on screen.

According to the plot, Mihrimah was almost forcibly married to Rustem Pasha to bring him closer to her father, Sultan Suleiman. The series suggests their relationship was unhappy, turning Mihrimah's life into a continuous ordeal.

Historians, however, assert the opposite. The feelings between Suleiman's daughter and Rustem Pasha were mutual. They collaborated on charitable endeavors and were considered a harmonious couple despite their significant age difference.

Experts note that even after the grand vizier's death, Mihrimah never remarried and lived the remainder of her life in solitude.

Nevertheless, the series creators opted for a more dramatic portrayal of the Ottoman ruler's daughter's life, intentionally altering her story, which disappointed attentive fans.

More than 70,000 complaints were submitted to the Supreme Council of Turkish Radio and Television, citing historical inaccuracies in the series.

This sparked a significant outcry over the discrepancies between historical facts and the show's storyline. Additionally, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, then Prime Minister of Turkey, criticized the series, stating that the creators sought to portray Turkish history negatively to the younger generation.

As a result, the producers clarified that while the series was inspired by historical events, "Magnificent Century" does not claim historical accuracy.
