Lolita Laughs Off Sanctions: Reveals Long-Held Israeli Citizenship
Discover how Lolita Milavskaya, a renowned singer, humorously responded to Ukraine's sanctions, highlighting her dual citizenship and unique story.
Many Russian celebrities dream of obtaining Israeli citizenship, but Lolita Milavskaya has proudly held hers for nearly five decades!
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently imposed sanctions on 119 cultural figures, including director Nikita Mikhalkov, singers Philip Kirkorov, Sergey Lazarev, Anna Netrebko, and comedian Yevgeny Petrosyan. These measures were intended to protect Ukraine's sovereignty; however, many of those targeted found the sanctions amusing or even prompted unexpected revelations.

Upon learning she was included on the sanctions list, Lolita, originally born in Ukraine, clarified why these restrictions do not affect her. She explained that she has been a citizen of both Russia and Israel for many years and has never held a Ukrainian passport. She addressed this discrepancy directly on her blog.
"I confirmed my Russian citizenship. However, the claim that I am a Ukrainian citizen is false—I have never been one, as I was a citizen of the USSR. I also confirm my Israeli citizenship, which I obtained because Ukraine expelled my father to Israel in 1974. He passed away in 1978, and I was granted Israeli citizenship based on his burial place," Lolita shared.

Following the sanctions, Lolita’s flights are banned from landing in Ukraine, and she is prohibited from privatizing property or owning natural resources there—restrictions she found particularly amusing. Most entertaining to her was the demand to return any awards she had received.
In a witty response, Lolita addressed President Zelensky in Ukrainian, requesting that she first be granted those awards before being asked to return them.
"Please, give me those awards! I’ll hold onto them for a while and then return them. People, don’t waste your time on nonsense! What have you really achieved?" she joked.

For now, Kyiv has not removed Lolita from the sanctions list, but her claim of Israeli citizenship might influence future decisions.
Interestingly, many Russian celebrities secretly hold Israeli passports, yet Lolita openly embraces hers, having possessed it for nearly 50 years. Despite this, she has no plans to leave Russia.
