Guernsey Ambulance Service Turns 90 with Island Memories Project

Guernsey's Island Memories Project gathers stories from ambulance staff, volunteers, and service users to mark the 90th anniversary, culminating in a 2026 photography exhibition.

Former ambulance service staff and volunteers are invited to share memories to mark the service's 90th anniversary. The Island Memories Project, led by Ambulance and Rescue Guernsey in partnership with Guernsey Museums, aims to capture first-hand stories that illuminate the island’s emergency services history.

The project builds on a 2025 collaboration with INLIBER Guernsey to mark the 80th anniversary of liberation, and it now expands to include voices from current and former staff, volunteers, allies, and people who benefited from the service. A 2026 photography exhibition in Candie Gardens will accompany the milestone and bring these memories to life for visitors.

Kit Hughes, assistant museums curator, welcomed the public response and thanked participants who have already contributed. He said the new phase will preserve the ambulance service’s 90-year story through the experiences of the people who lived it.

Capturing Memories

Dean de la Mare, head of operations, said the partnership with Guernsey Museums is a timely way to celebrate the 90th anniversary next year. He invites anyone with memories from the early years—stories of cliff rescues, the diving team, or the recompression chamber—to come forward. He also noted that while some retired staff have been reached through the St John Fellowship, many other workers and volunteers may have valuable recollections to share.
