Former Kazakh Minister Portrays Himself as Victim in Court: 'My Wife’s Face Bounced Off the Toilet!'
Kuandyk Bishimbaev recalls a bathroom altercation with his late wife Saltanat Nukenova, claiming she was the instigator. The tragic case continues to unfold as authorities investigate the brutal assault leading to her death.
Kuandyk Bishimbaev recounted a conflict with Saltanat Nukenova that took place in the bathroom, asserting that his wife was the one who initiated the dispute.
In November 2023, Kazakhstan mourned the loss of 31-year-old Saltanat Nukenova, who died following a violent assault. During her funeral, her disfigured face was concealed even from close family members.
Law enforcement agencies are still actively investigating this crime. The primary suspect is the victim’s husband—former Kazakh Minister of National Economy, Kuandyk Bishimbaev, who remains in custody during the ongoing investigation. Saltanat’s brother, Aitbek Amangeldy, firmly believes in Bishimbaev’s guilt. Previously, he shared surveillance footage on his personal blog showing the husband striking Saltanat, causing her to fall.
Recently, in court, Kuandyk described a confrontation with his late wife that occurred months before the tragedy. The Telegram channel “Sputnik Kazakhstan” shared video footage from the hearing.
Bishimbaev claims that Saltanat herself sparked the argument, which took place in the bathroom. According to him, she declared she no longer wanted the items he had purchased for her the day before.
“She started tearing off her shirt and threw it at me. Honestly, I lost my temper and slapped her a couple of times. Then she stepped back,” the husband recalled.
Kuandyk explained that everything happened rapidly. When Saltanat attempted to remove her pants to throw them at him as well, he grabbed her from behind, saying, “Stop. What are you doing?” but she struggled.
The incident occurred near the toilet. When Bishimbaev released her, Saltanat lost her balance and fell. “She first hit the wall, pushed off with her hand, and then fell face-first onto the toilet. She crashed hard, and her face bounced off the toilet before she collapsed onto the floor,” he described.

He admitted he was shocked by what happened. According to him, Saltanat lay there for 10-15 seconds with her eyes open before trying to get up. Bishimbaev claims he did not assist her. He also stated that she removed all the jewelry he had gifted her and flushed them down the toilet.
Saltanat managed to stand briefly but then lost her balance again. “She was knocked down, lost her balance once more, and hit her face against the tiled floor. I stood at the bathroom entrance watching this unfold,” he said.
Eventually, Bishimbaev helped his wife up and noticed a cut on her neck.

It has been previously established that Saltanat suffered regular physical abuse. Evidence came from her friends, to whom she sent photos of bruises and confided about her husband’s aggressive behavior. Additionally, it was revealed that the former minister installed a tracking device in Saltanat’s car. Despite leaving her abusive spouse multiple times, she repeatedly gave him another chance.
