Prosecutor Reveals Turning Point That Led to Conviction of Former Kazakh Minister Bishimbaev

Ajzhan Aimagambetova shares insights on the verdict and key moments that shifted the trial's course in the high-profile case against former Kazakh minister Kuandyk Bishimbaev.

Ajzhan Aimagambetova expressed her views on the delivered verdict and highlighted pivotal moments during the trial that changed its direction.

The tragic story of Saltanat Nukenova, who was fatally abused by her husband, continues to resonate widely online. Although the lengthy court proceedings concluded on May 13, 2024, the case involving Kuandyk Bishimbaev remains under intense scrutiny by experts and concerned individuals worldwide.

The former Kazakh Minister of National Economy was sentenced to 24 years in prison for the murder of his wife. He has consistently denied any guilt.

In an interview with the YouTube channel TENGRI TV, prosecutor Ajzhan Aimagambetova stated that she considers the verdict just and fair.

“We recommended the court impose 20 years under Article 99 and an additional 7 years under Article 110. By partially combining these, we sought a total sentence of 24 years, which is close to the maximum penalty,” said the lead prosecutor, emphasizing that this term objectively reflects the severity of the crime.

Aimagambetova revealed that a critical turning point in the case was when Bishimbaev provided the password to his phone. Inside were brutal videos that, while not presenting new evidence, significantly strengthened the prosecution's case. “They didn’t reveal anything new, but they greatly reinforced the charges,” she explained.

The prosecutor admitted satisfaction with the verdict but refrained from calling it a victory. She added, “Victory is a strong word. There are no winners or losers here.”

Interviewer Zaure Kazibaeva mentioned reports of threats against the judge circulating online and inquired whether Aimagambetova herself had faced any intimidation. She firmly denied any such experiences.

Recall that Saltanat Nukenova and Kuandyk Bishimbaev met via social media in summer 2022 and married by autumn. Initially, Saltanat was immersed in joyful family life, unaware of the tragic fate awaiting her.

Shortly after their wedding, Bishimbaev ceased hiding his true nature, frequently abusing the woman whose attention he had once sought so persistently. The physical violence soon became a regular occurrence. Despite efforts by Saltanat’s brother to protect her, she refused to leave Bishimbaev, believing she could save their young family.

Saltanat tragically died at the hands of Bishimbaev on November 9, 2023, at the age of 31. In April 2024, Kazakhstan’s president signed into law the criminalization of domestic violence, informally known as the “Saltanat Law.”
