The 22-year-old was summoned less than 24 hours before the race start to replace an injured Damiano Caruso on the Bahrain Victorious squad. After a training mishap, Pickering raced to retrieve his wheels and received the call as he headed out.
He travelled by taxi from Andorra to Toulouse, flew to Turin, and arrived only with hand luggage, fortunately carrying his cycling shoes. Despite the unconventional build-up, he completed stage one in 153rd place.
