October 17 Marks Russia's First Ever Father's Day Celebration
In honor of Father's Day in Russia, the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) conducted a survey revealing that citizens believe an ideal father should actively participate in their children's lives and respect their mother.
According to Russians, the ideal father is one who actively engages in his children's lives, cares for them, respects their mother, and serves as a role model.
On the eve of Father's Day, VCIOM, in partnership with the NGO “National Priorities,” conducted a survey showing that two-thirds of Russians (66%) are aware of the newly established national holiday—Father's Day—which will be celebrated annually on the third Sunday of October (71–73% among older generations, 69% among women).
Russians identified the top five popular ways to congratulate fathers on this special day:
- Visiting and spending time together over a family meal (49%);
- Being present on the day and helping with household chores or similar activities (32%);
- Giving a gift that the father has long wished for (23%);
- Expressing gratitude for his love and care (23%);
- Creating a handmade gift (12%).
Citizens also highlighted the top five qualities that best describe the modern ideal father:
- Caring and respectful attitude towards the children's mother (33%);
- Active involvement in children's lives and jointly solving problems (29%);
- Being a role model (19%);
- Kindness (18%);
- Reliability (17%).
Two-thirds of Russians (67%) believe that seeing a man with a small child at a playground is a common sight, not an exception that draws attention (73% among 35–44-year-olds, 72% among men); 31% hold the opposite view (36% among women).
Sophia Malyavina, CEO of the NGO “National Priorities,” commented: “A month ago, the NGO ‘National Priorities’ together with VCIOM prepared an expert report on the modern Russian family. Experts discussed the evolving role of fathers, noting that many dads no longer see themselves solely as providers but want to dedicate more time to family and children, reflecting a new trend towards ‘conscious fatherhood.’ Now, just a month later, Russia has introduced a new holiday—Father's Day.
The survey results reveal an important insight: both women and men prioritize similar traits in the 'ideal father' image. This suggests that most Russian families share mutual understanding and agreement regarding family roles. Judging by the responses, it is likely that a majority will celebrate and honor their fathers or the fathers of their children on this inaugural Father's Day.”
