Nato Bolsters Eastern Defences After Russian Drone Incursion Over Poland

Germany, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic are deploying troops, air defence systems and artillery to strengthen Nato’s eastern flank after Russian drones breached Polish airspace.

Several Nato members have moved troops, artillery and air defence systems to bolster the eastern flank following an unprecedented Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace.

In the early hours, Polish forces shot down three drones that crossed the border, while remnants of other UAVs were recovered across eastern Poland. Warsaw has called a UN Security Council meeting for Friday at 19:00 GMT to address the incident.

The Netherlands will deploy air defence batteries, artillery and 300 troops to Poland, while the Czech Republic will send helicopters and 100 soldiers. Germany will intensify its presence along Nato’s eastern border, extend air policing over Poland and station a brigade in Lithuania to deter any spillover from Russian aerial operations. France and the UK stand ready to contribute aircraft.

Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said: “Today, we have concrete declarations of support.” President Karol Nawrocki and Nato’s top commander warned the incursion may be a deliberate test of allied readiness.

In response to heightened tensions, Poland will restrict drone flights and small aircraft near its eastern borders with Belarus and Ukraine, and Latvia has closed its eastern airspace for a week. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky offered guidance on defending against Russian aerial threats and called for a joint European air defence shield.

Meanwhile, joint Belarus-Russia military exercises, Zapad 2025, begin on Friday near Poland’s border. Poland announced a temporary closure of its frontier with Belarus for “national security reasons.” Military intelligence indicates the drills will involve up to 30,000 troops.

Nato’s swift mobilisation underscores solidarity and highlights the alliance’s resolve to defend its eastern frontier against escalating Russian provocations.
