OpenAI confirmed a critical service outage that affected all ChatGPT users across all subscription tiers. The disruption began in the early hours and was resolved by early afternoon ET. The root cause has not been publicly disclosed. This incident came shortly after OpenAI introduced its newest AI model, GPT-4o.
Gemini Searches Spike Amid Service Interruption
During the ChatGPT downtime, Google search queries for "Gemini" hit 327,058, marking a 60% increase compared to the average daily volume of 204,991 recorded between May 4 and June 3, according to QRFY's analysis. While searches for "Microsoft Copilot" also increased, the spike was less pronounced than for Gemini.
Marc Porcar, CEO of QRFY, commented, "Google has made remarkable strides positioning Gemini as OpenAI's key competitor in conversational AI. The direct correlation between ChatGPT's outage and Gemini's search surge confirms that users view Gemini as a compelling alternative."
Porcar added, "In the absence of ChatGPT, users are clearly turning their attention to Gemini."
Following the outage, Microsoft shares closed up 0.6% at $416.07, while Alphabet (Google's parent company) shares rose 0.4% to $173.79.
