Four Compelling Reasons to Stop Running and Start Dancing

Discover why dancing can be a more enjoyable and beneficial alternative to running.

While you share your latest running photos and updates on Instagram, let me remind you that there are many wonderful activities beyond running—dancing is one of them.

I personally enjoy running, but for the past couple of years, I've also been passionate about swing dancing. I can compare both experiences. This article mainly focuses on swing, as it’s my favorite, but similar benefits apply to Latin dances as well. Here are four reasons why you should start dancing today.

1. Physical Exercise

A typical dance session burns about the same amount of energy as a moderate 3-mile run. So, if you’re looking for regular cardio workouts, dancing is an excellent choice. Unlike running, dancing not only improves your endurance but also enhances your skills, repertoire of moves, musicality, partner connection, and many other fascinating abilities.

2. Social Interaction

Social dances are, first and foremost, about communication—a dialogue through movement. For this reason alone, dancing is at least twice as engaging as running.

Dance communities are vibrant and welcoming. They tend to attract students, mid-level professionals, and many tech enthusiasts. The environment is friendly and respectful, free from unpleasant individuals.

3. Parties and Events

Beyond regular classes, you can attend weekend dance parties where you dance purely for enjoyment. These events often involve live music, making the experience even more dynamic and interactive—not just with your partner but also with the musicians.

4. Global Community

By joining the dance scene, you become part of a worldwide network of swing dancers or salsa enthusiasts, depending on your style. You can visit major cities across Europe and North America and join local dance events, meet new people, and showcase your skills.

What’s Holding You Back?

Many might think, "With my natural lack of grace, how can I dance?" This isn’t about ballroom dancing. You don’t need grace to enjoy lindy hop or boogie-woogie—trust me, it’s been proven! :)

Another common misconception is that you need a permanent partner. That’s not true. These dances don’t require a fixed partner, so feel free to come alone.

How Does It Work?

Find a group that meets at a convenient time and place. Typically, classes are held twice a week. In many cities, a single session costs between $4 and $6. After about a month, you’ll be ready to attend social dance parties.

In conclusion, if running feels dull but you still want to stay active, learn something new, lift your spirits, and meet new people, why not give dancing a try?
