Discovery of Ancient River Delta and Lake on Mars
NASA's Perseverance rover uncovers compelling evidence of a historic river delta and ancient lake within Jezero Crater, revealing dynamic water activity on Mars.
The ancient lake within Jezero Crater exhibited dynamic behavior throughout its existence, with fluctuating water levels over time.
Scientists at NASA have unveiled new evidence supporting the theory that Mars once harbored liquid water. This breakthrough is based on recent images captured by the Perseverance rover, currently exploring Jezero Crater.

The rover’s photographs reveal the crater’s terraces and a small hill named Kodiak. These images enabled researchers to examine distinct layers of rock and sediment that closely resemble terrestrial formations found in regions once covered by water. It is believed that Jezero Crater was once an ancient lake fed by a river.
Previously, the hypothesis of a lake and river delta in the northwest section of Jezero was proposed based on orbital imagery. Scientists theorized that this 30.4-mile (49 km) wide crater was once filled with water. The latest findings from Perseverance’s photos have now definitively confirmed this theory.

Researchers also observed large rocks and boulders scattered across the crater, some measuring up to 4.9 feet (1.5 meters) wide. This suggests that floodwaters transported these stones from beyond the crater’s rim. The team estimated that the water flow speeds ranged between 3.7 to 18.6 mph (6 to 30 km/h).
Additional data indicates that the lake within Jezero experienced dynamic fluctuations in water levels throughout its lifespan, alternating between periods of flooding and drought.

Currently, scientists plan to collect soil samples using the rover, which will later be transported back to Earth for comprehensive analysis and the search for signs of ancient life. The fine-grained material at the delta’s bottom may contain organic compounds and biosignatures, while the overlying boulders could provide insight into even older rock formations.
Previously, Perseverance conducted preliminary analyses of samples from Jezero Crater. These findings confirmed that water persisted there for an extended duration—potentially spanning tens of thousands to millions of years.
