Confirmed rumors reveal that Spotify now allows podcasters to generate revenue through paid subscriptions, facilitated by the Anchor platform. This system enables iOS users to subscribe to their favorite podcasts without incurring the typical 30% App Store commission. Subscribers can enjoy exclusive bonus content directly within the Spotify app or through other podcast apps using RSS feeds.
While technically podcasters can make all episodes paid, the system is designed primarily to let creators offer special episodes exclusively for paying subscribers, which remain inaccessible to regular listeners. Additionally, podcasters can release episodes free of advertising. These exclusive bonuses will be marked with a lock icon to distinguish them.
For the first two years, Spotify will waive its commission fees for these subscriptions. However, payments are processed through Stripe, which charges a small transaction fee. After this initial period, Spotify's commission will be set at 5%.
Currently, only 12 creators based in the United States can implement paid subscriptions. Following a brief testing phase, podcasters from various countries will be able to apply for this monetization feature, though detailed terms have yet to be disclosed.
Subscription prices are set by the creators themselves. In the U.S., three pricing tiers are available: $2.99, $4.99, or $7.99 per month. Podcasts are not yet accessible on Spotify in Russia, so regional pricing remains undisclosed.
