Nat Sciver-Brunt urges continued growth in The Hundred women's competition with new investment
England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt urges continued momentum and investment in The Hundred women's competition as private ownership arrives.
England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has emphasised the need to maintain momentum in The Hundred women's competition as private investment enters the tournament.
From next summer, all eight franchises will have private owners. Chelsea FC owner Todd Boehly has purchased a 49% stake in the Trent Rockets, while three other US investors and four Indian Premier League franchise owners have invested in the remaining teams. Only the Mumbai Indians' Ambani family, acquiring 49% of Oval Invincibles, also owns a Women's Premier League side in India.
"In the first five years we've done a lot of things right. On the women's side, feeling equal in opportunity and support to the men's game has transformed our approach and performance," Sciver-Brunt told INLIBER Sport. "It’s vital we retain that sense of belonging."
Attendance for women's matches has exceeded 100,000 over the past two seasons, with 47,726 fans attending four games on 17 and 18 August alone. "Additional investment should benefit both men's and women's teams. While the details are still to emerge, I’m optimistic about the impact," Sciver-Brunt added.
One aspect under review is the popular double-header format. ECB chief executive Richard Gould has proposed standalone women's fixtures to attract full capacity crowds in the coming years.
The Hundred's next phase of private ownership must build on the competition's early success to ensure equality, growth and strong fan engagement for the women's game.
