England's Matt Fitzpatrick posted a three-under-par 69 in round two of the British Masters, leaving him one shot behind leader Marcel Siem heading into the weekend at the Belfry.
The 2022 U.S. Open champion sank his fifth birdie of the day from 22 feet on the 18th green, while Germany's Siem also carded a 69, boosted by an eagle on the par-five 17th.
"It was a solid day," Fitzpatrick said. "I drove the ball well and hit better irons, which gave me plenty of chances. When your irons and putting click, you put yourself in contention."
Siem leads at nine under, with Fitzpatrick on eight. England's Matt Wallace, seeking a Ryder Cup spot, sits at seven under alongside New Zealand's Kazuma Kobori and South Africa's Brandon Stone.
Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard, at four under, is on course to claim the final automatic Ryder Cup spot for Europe, provided he finishes joint 29th or better, since Shane Lowry is playing a non-qualifying event.
Fitzpatrick's strong second round boosts his Ryder Cup prospects as he closes to within one shot of the British Masters lead.
