Their first observation was that these smartphones are easier to open compared to the previous generation, simplifying battery replacement for users.
In the earlier iPhone 5s, the fingerprint scanner tightly bonded the screen to the Lightning port, making disassembly risky. Last year, iFixit experienced this firsthand when pulling the screen too quickly caused potential internal damage.
With the new iPhone models, Apple reengineered this component. The flex cable now routes from the top of the screen, allowing for smoother and safer opening of the device.
By simply unscrewing two screws, users can easily separate the metal frame from the display. Disconnecting the cables allows the screen to be set aside without hassle, making the opening process comparable to that of the iPhone 5 and 5c.
The battery stands out as the most significant component inside. The iPhone 6 houses a 1,810 mAh battery weighing 28 grams, while the iPhone 6 Plus features a larger 2,915 mAh battery weighing 43 grams. For comparison, the iPhone 5s battery capacity was 1,560 mAh.
The battery connector remains protected by a metal bracket secured with just one screw. The battery itself is held in place by a dual-sided adhesive strip with a pull tab, allowing for easy removal when needed.
Further analysis is required to confirm the manufacturer behind the A8 processors, but it is already known that the devices come equipped with 1 GB of RAM supplied by Elpida.
After thorough examination, both smartphones earned a repairability score of 7 out of 10. This rating reflects some challenges such as the use of pentalobe screws and Apple's limited repair documentation, which restricts third-party service centers from accessing detailed repair guides.
