Which iPhone Models Are Most Commonly Traded In for the New iPhone 13?
In just two weeks, SellCell received thousands of trade-in requests and revealed the most frequently exchanged iPhone models for the iPhone 13.
The initial trade-ins reveal which users are most eager to upgrade from their old smartphones.
Leading American retailer of used electronics, SellCell, has published data from its pre-trade-in program. This initiative allows owners of older iPhones to lock in a trade-in value before the new model's release—users send in their old devices only after receiving the new one. Within just two weeks, SellCell processed thousands of applications and shared insights on the most commonly traded models for the iPhone 13.

Remarkably, iPhone 11 accounted for 18% of all trade-ins. This trend makes sense given the significant upgrades in design, camera technology, and display features in the iPhone 13. Additionally, the 2019 flagship's value continues to decline, making this an ideal time to sell it at a favorable price.
It's important to note that in the United States, smartphone purchases are often made through installment contracts. Consumers pay a monthly fee to their carrier that covers both the device cost and service charges. These contracts typically last two years, after which the phone fully belongs to the user. Many who bought the iPhone 11 on contract at launch have just completed payments and are now in a position to sell their devices and upgrade to the latest model.
The second most traded models are tied between the three-year-old iPhone XR and the soon-to-be-replaced flagship iPhone 12 Pro Max, each representing 14% of trade-ins. XR owners may simply be looking to refresh their devices, while SellCell attributes the popularity of trading in the iPhone 12 Pro Max to its strong resale value, enabling users to upgrade with minimal additional cost.
Rounding out the top three is the iPhone 11 Pro Max at 11% of trade-ins, likely reflecting similar motivations as the standard iPhone 11. Notably, Pro models did not feature prominently in the trade-in list, possibly due to the absence of a compact flagship in the 2021 lineup. Following these are five older models, with the iPhone 12 ranking lowest on the trade-in list.
