How Apple Promoted Its First Macintosh in the 1980s

Today, Apple computers are far more widespread than they were over 30 years ago. The Macintosh has undergone a remarkable evolution, transforming computers into truly mainstream devices. The advertising for the first Macs was vastly different from modern campaigns because Apple had to educate potential buyers not only about the advantages of these new computers but also about fundamental concepts like the desktop interface and mouse operation. Here's how it all unfolded.

In December 1983, a comprehensive advertisement for the Macintosh appeared in several popular publications, including Time magazine. This ad was extensive—spanning a full 18 pages. A few months later, in the fall of 1984, Apple broke new ground by purchasing the entire special edition of Newsweek for its Macintosh advertising—a whopping 39 pages!

Thanks to the extensive vintage collection of MacMothership, we can now glimpse what the very first Macintosh advertisements looked like. Below are four pages from the original 18-page ad published in December 1983.

Even back then, Apple understood the power of memorable product names, dedicating several paragraphs on the first page to this topic.

When the engineers finished their work, they showed us a personal computer so good, it could practically shake your hand.

It was so easy to use, anyone could figure it out.

It wasn’t named QZ190 or Zipchip 5000.

It was called Macintosh.

Now, we want to introduce it to you.

Apple then introduced users to the mouse. Although the device was invented in the early 1960s, it only gained widespread adoption with the release of the Macintosh.

The company also focused heavily on the Macintosh’s internal components. Every key element was described in meticulous detail. Interestingly, Apple later employed this semi-transparent case effect in the advertising campaign for the first iMac.

Finally, one page highlighted the advantages of the Macintosh’s graphical user interface compared to IBM PCs. It showcased file management, spreadsheets, graphing, and terminal emulation. Apple didn’t miss the chance to poke fun at IBM by displaying a blank screen in one of the graphing images.
