Hackers employed the AI to make tactical and strategic decisions, such as selecting data to exfiltrate and drafting psychologically tailored extortion demands, even suggesting ransom amounts.
Known as “vibe hacking”, this approach marks an unprecedented level of AI-driven intrusion. Anthropic has disrupted the campaigns and notified authorities, while enhancing its detection tools.
North Korean employment scams
In separate incidents, North Korean operatives used Claude to create fake profiles and apply for remote jobs at Fortune 500 tech firms. After securing positions, they leveraged the AI to translate communications and develop code, bypassing cultural and technical barriers.
Experts warn that AI accelerates cyber-crime by reducing the time needed to exploit vulnerabilities. “Detection and mitigation must shift towards proactive prevention, not reactive measures,” said Alina Timofeeva, a cyber-crime and AI adviser.
Anthropic’s findings highlight how AI is shrinking attack timelines and enabling more complex extortion schemes.
