1. The Solovetsky Islands

The largest archipelago in the White Sea is renowned not only for its rich history and architectural marvels but also for its stunning natural beauty. Comprising six major islands and hundreds of smaller ones, the Solovetsky Islands feature the spiritual heart of the region—the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, established in the 15th century.
Nature here is truly unique: wander through pristine coniferous forests, encounter seals, belugas, and sea hares, and witness the magical northern lights after sunset. Numerous freshwater lakes add to the scenic charm, and the summer climate is pleasantly mild.
Access to the islands is available via direct cruise ships from Saint Petersburg, charter flights from Arkhangelsk, or by train to Kem followed by a ferry ride.

2. Kivach Waterfall

Located near the Solovetsky Islands, Kivach is Karelia's natural jewel. Though not the tallest waterfall in the region, it is celebrated for its power and beauty. Ranking as the second most powerful lowland waterfall in Europe after the Rhine Falls, Kivach leaves visitors in awe.
Hidden beneath tall trees within the Kivach Nature Reserve, the waterfall is accessible by car or public transport. Visitors traveling by river cruise can stop in Petrozavodsk and join guided tours or hike approximately 8 kilometers from the village of Sopokha.

Journey to the Krasnoyarsk region to discover the vast Putorana Plateau, one of Russia’s largest mountain ranges. The highest peak, Kamen Mountain, rises to 1,701 meters. The area is home to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Putorana Nature Reserve.
This remote sanctuary is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and those seeking tranquility. Deep canyons cradle numerous waterfalls and lakes, while Siberian coniferous forests flourish with lingonberries and cloudberries. The reserve shelters the world’s largest population of wild reindeer and other endangered species.
Access is limited to water or air transport from June to September when the weather is warm and waters are ice-free. The journey typically begins in Krasnoyarsk, continuing by river to Dudinka, followed by a helicopter tour to the plateau’s summit.

4. The Blue Lakes

Near Kazan lies a trio of pristine lakes known for their crystal-clear, vibrant blue waters: Bolshoye Goluboye, Protochnoye, and Maloye Goluboye. These natural monuments attract visitors from across the country.
The lakes’ renowned transparency reveals the lakebed from shore, with their azure hue resulting from blue-colored silt mud at the bottom. Bolshoye Goluboye, the largest, reaches depths up to 18 meters in certain spots. Water temperatures remain steady year-round between 3°C and 7°C, making it a favorite spot for winter swimmers. Water color varies seasonally from bright azure to deep black.
Reaching the Blue Lakes is simple; they are located less than an hour from Kazan’s city center. Private transport is recommended, though buses to the village of Shcherbakovo are available.

6. Tanais Reserve

Experience a slice of ancient Greece on the shores of the Sea of Azov at the Tanais Reserve. Located near Rostov-on-Don, the city of Tanais was founded by Greek settlers in the 3rd century BCE and historically marked the boundary between Europe and Asia.
Once a thriving economic and cultural hub, Tanais was devastated by Gothic invasions in the 5th century and later by Timur’s troops in the 14th century. Archaeological excavations in the 19th century uncovered ruins of ancient temples and dwellings, now preserved within the reserve.
Visitors can easily reach Tanais by train from Rostov to the Nedvigovka settlement, disembarking at the 'Tanais' stop.
