While the melting iceberg presents a breathtaking natural show, it also poses ecological concerns. Remote South Georgia Island serves as a critical sanctuary for seals and over two million penguins. The grounded iceberg could force these animals to travel hundreds of extra kilometers to find food. Additionally, the influx of meltwater may alter ocean salinity and temperature, potentially impacting the delicate Antarctic ecosystem.
Nevertheless, experts offer cautious optimism. Some researchers argue that A23a remains sufficiently distant—about 100 kilometers from shore—to minimize serious harm.
