Taipei Knife Attack Leaves 3 Dead After Metro Smoke Bombing

An attacker used smoke devices and a large blade in Taipei’s metro and nearby streets, killing at least three people and injuring nine during the evening rush, with authorities tightening security.

In Taipei, a knife-wielding attacker killed at least three people and left nine injured after smoke devices were used in busy parts of the city’s transport network during the evening rush. The violence began at Taipei Main Station and spread toward Zhongshan Station and nearby shopping streets.

Police said the suspect released smoke bombs at Taipei Main Station, a major hub linked to an underground shopping area, then headed to Zhongshan Station about 800 meters away. Video clips circulating online show a person in dark clothes and a cap releasing smoke while carrying a large knife as cars halt nearby.

After a stop at a hotel to pick up another weapon, the attacker returned to the street outside Zhongshan Station and continued the assault, using smoke devices and stabbing several more victims. He moved into a nearby bookshop and a department store before police surrounded him. He then fell from a building and died in hospital later that night, according to officials.

Officials say the motive remains unclear. Such attacks are rare in Taiwan, a country with low crime rates. The last major incident in Taipei occurred in 2014 when a person killed four people on an underground train.

Premier Cho Jung-tai ordered higher security at metro and railway stations as well as airports and called for a rapid review of the attacker’s background to identify any links or motives. President William Lai also pledged a thorough investigation. Local media reported that the suspect had a criminal record and was wanted by authorities.

Expert comment

Security analysts note that mass violence of this kind is uncommon in Taiwan and may reflect a lone actor rather than a terror organization. Investigators will examine the suspect’s history for possible connections or mental health factors to understand the motive.

Short summary

This incident underscores the need for swift emergency responses at busy transport hubs. Officials have promised increased security at major rail and metro stations while investigations continue. Citizens should follow guidance from official channels and stay informed.

Key takeaway: Even in societies with low crime rates, transport hubs demand constant vigilance and rapid response plans. BBC coverage.
