According to Business Insider, Google kept gathering location data even when users disabled geolocation and opted out of the “location sharing” feature. These revelations come from court documents related to a lawsuit filed by Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich against Google.
The documents also highlight that Google intentionally made privacy settings harder to find. During testing of Android versions designed to simplify access to these settings, users readily enabled them, which Google perceived as a "problem." Consequently, developers chose to bury these options deeper within the Android system menus.
Furthermore, Google pressured manufacturers like LG and others to hide or obscure privacy settings, making it more difficult for users to understand and properly activate them. Beyond this, Google employed additional methods to collect location data, such as connecting to Wi-Fi hotspots and leveraging third-party apps unrelated to the company.
In response, Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda told The Verge via email that these allegations are competitive tactics aimed at tarnishing the company’s reputation.
