Unlock Massive Music Storage: Upload Up to 50,000 Tracks to Google Music Now

Discover how Google Music’s expanded upload limit empowers you to store and stream an enormous personal music library for free, offering a seamless alternative to paid services.

Google Music is a dynamic music platform that lets you enjoy unlimited streaming through subscription or upload your own music collection to the cloud for free listening anywhere. Previously, users could upload up to 20,000 personal tracks, but now this limit has soared to an impressive 50,000. This enhancement unlocks far greater possibilities than you might expect.

As a passionate fan of Google Music, I’ve cherished the service deeply — it’s the only platform I’ve ever tried to pay for continuously over three days straight when my payment card was initially declined. The term “music addict” perfectly describes those who simply can’t go a day without music. I’m one of them, and Google Music is my daily source of fresh tunes.

The platform offers three main ways to enjoy music:

  1. Purchase individual tracks and albums, similar to iTunes Store.
  2. Subscribe monthly (for about $2) to access the entire music catalog.
  3. Upload your own tracks (including non-purchased ones) to Google’s cloud, enabling access across all your devices.

Let's focus on the last option, which is completely free and very convenient if you have your music library stored as MP3 files on your computer. Until recently, the upload cap was 20,000 tracks. Now, Google has increased this limit by 2.5 times to 50,000 tracks.

Imagine this: an average album contains about 10 songs, which means you can upload up to 5,000 albums. Considering that discographies typically have between 7 and 20 albums — averaging around 10 — you could store about 500 complete discographies. And all of this is absolutely free.

The only major alternative to Google Music’s upload feature has been iTunes Match, which offers similar functions. It allows uploading personal tracks and replacing them with licensed versions from iTunes, plus offline downloads on up to 10 devices.

However, iTunes Match is a paid service, costing approximately $11 per year, which is a modest fee compared to its U.S. price of $25. Previously, there were two main reasons to choose iTunes Match over Google Music:

  1. Higher track limit: 25,000 tracks on iTunes Match versus 20,000 on Google Music.
  2. Native iOS and Mac applications, which are generally more polished than Google’s offerings.

With Google Music now supporting up to 50,000 tracks, the first advantage disappears. The second remains a consideration—whether paying for Apple's native apps is worth it depends on your preferences.

Following recent updates, Google Music seems to be integrating Android app concepts into its iOS version. While this approach has some drawbacks, it’s not a dealbreaker. The iOS app looks appealing but may run slower on older iPhone models like the iPhone 5 and earlier.

Additionally, Google Music has finally added the complete Led Zeppelin discography, much to the delight of classic rock fans.

Both Google Music and iTunes Match have their strengths. Beyond subscription models, Google Music’s standout feature is its free, massive upload capacity, while iTunes Match excels with its seamless integration on Apple devices. Ultimately, the choice depends on what suits your music listening habits best.
