Lleyton Hewitt Receives Two-Week Ban and A$30,000 Fine for Pushing Doping Official

Australia's Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt has been suspended for two weeks and fined A$30,000 after being found guilty of shoving a doping control official following the Davis Cup semi-final loss to Italy.

Australia's Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt has been suspended for two weeks and fined A$30,000 (£14,600) for pushing a doping control official.

The 44-year-old former world No. 1 shoved a 60-year-old volunteer chaperone after Australia's Davis Cup semi-final defeat to Italy in Malaga last November. In January, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) charged Hewitt with offensive conduct following video evidence, witness statements and interviews.

Hewitt denied the allegation, claiming self-defence. However, an independent tribunal ruled his actions "did not meet the requirements of self-defence" and described the push as "excessive" and "disproportionate."

The ban bars Hewitt from all tennis-related activities from 24 September to 7 October. He will still captain Australia in their Davis Cup qualifying tie against Belgium in Sydney on 13-14 September, as the tribunal sought to avoid unduly disrupting his schedule.

The two-time Grand Slam champion can appeal, though the ITIA has received no such appeal to date. "Anti-doping personnel play a fundamental role behind the scenes in upholding the integrity of tennis," ITIA CEO Karen Moorhouse said. "They must be able to carry out their duties without fear of physical contact. That line was clearly crossed, leaving us no choice but to act."

Hewitt's appeal was rejected as the tribunal deemed his push against the anti-doping chaperone "excessive," underlining the sport's zero-tolerance stance on physical interference with officials.
