Kate Cross calls World Cup squad snub 'savage'

England seamer Kate Cross described missing out on the Women's World Cup 50-over squad as 'savage', citing form struggles and a recent back injury.

Experienced seamer overlooked

England seamer Kate Cross, 33, said being left out of the 15-player squad for the upcoming Women's World Cup "feels savage". The tournament runs from 30 September to 2 November in India and Sri Lanka.

Cross, one of England's most capped ODI players, struggled for form after a back injury late last year. She opened the bowling in the first match of the recent ODI series against India but was dropped after the rain-affected second ODI at Lord's and missed the decider at Chester-le-Street.

Raw reaction to omission

"It all feels like it happened so quickly," Cross told the No Balls podcast. "I've clearly fallen out of favour. I haven't processed it yet - it still feels raw."

She revealed being told she wasn't selected was "one of the worst days" of her career, leaving her feeling "quite sick". Despite England's decision to favour spin, Cross believes her experience merited a place on the plane.

Future plans

England coach Charlotte Edwards selected three seamers alongside all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt: Em Arlott, Lauren Bell and Lauren Filer on pitches expected to favour slow bowlers. Cross, now playing for Northern Superchargers in The Hundred, awaits a discussion on a potential standby role.

"Being left off the plane feels savage, especially after a career of contributions - this omission was a tough reality check."
