Ann Silberman's Story
When my oncologist told me, “Your breast cancer has spread to your liver,” I was overwhelmed with shock and disbelief. Metastatic cancer felt like a death sentence, especially since my initial diagnosis was stage 2A with no lymph node involvement. Only four months after completing treatment, metastasis became my reality.
Instead of dwelling on "Why me?"—a question with no answer—I focused on living as fully and normally as possible. Metastatic cancer gradually takes away your health, time, work, and sometimes even relationships. Yet, it also reveals unexpected kindness from friends and strangers who offer support in countless ways.
Throughout my journey, I experienced both setbacks and victories. I underwent multiple treatments, including surgeries and radiation, and faced the physical and emotional toll of the disease. However, advances in medicine, like the introduction of Perjeta, have given me hope and a renewed future.
I’ve learned that living with metastatic cancer means embracing the present moment, as the future remains uncertain and the past fades away. This perspective has become my guiding truth.
Katherine O’Brien’s Insights
Diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at 43, I was metastatic from the start, unlike many who experience progression after early-stage treatment. Accepting this was challenging, but I wish I had known these six key lessons early on:
- Metastatic breast cancer varies greatly. My mother’s aggressive disease was different from my stable bone-only metastases, which have been manageable for years.
- Your experience may differ. I maintain my daily routines, work, travel, and volunteer despite my diagnosis.
- Your pathology report is crucial. ER/PR and HER2 status guide treatment, and new biopsies can reveal important changes.
- Seek emotional support and professional help when needed. Mental health is vital.
- Find community support, whether in-person or online, through groups like Breastcancer.org or Living Beyond Breast Cancer.
- Focus on living one day at a time, appreciating the present rather than worrying about the unknown.
Susan Rahn’s Journey
My oncologist’s words were clear: while treatments could help control the cancer, metastatic breast cancer was incurable. Diagnosed de novo in 2013, the cancer had spread to my spine and ribs, discovered only after persistent back pain. The prognosis was daunting, with median survival statistics suggesting limited time.
Since then, I’ve endured multiple treatments, surgeries, and hospital stays. Yet, I’ve chosen to use my experience to educate and support others through social media and blogging. I discovered that metastatic breast cancer research is underfunded and that the disease is far more complex than the often oversimplified pink ribbon narrative.
Alongside friends, I co-founded The Underbelly, a digital magazine and community dedicated to honest conversations about breast cancer’s challenges. I also serve as outreach coordinator for The Cancer Couch Foundation, which uniquely doubles donations to fund vital metastatic research.
Though the journey is difficult and unpredictable, I’m committed to leaving a legacy of awareness and hope for my son and future generations.
