Hundreds March in London to Demand Release of Gaza Hostages
Pro-Israel demonstrators called on the UK government to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza, expressing frustration over policy on Palestinian state recognition.
Protest in Central London
Hundreds of pro-Israel supporters gathered in central London on Sunday, carrying Israeli flags and placards displaying the faces of hostages still held in Gaza. The march, led by the UK’s Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and the group Stop The Hate, demanded swift action to free those abducted by Hamas on 7 October 2023.
Calls for Government Action
Many protesters criticised the UK government’s plan to recognise a Palestinian state in September unless certain conditions are met, calling it a “reward for Hamas.” Adam Ma’anit, who lost relatives in the cross-border attacks, urged ministers to explore all avenues to secure the hostages’ freedom. “The freedom of the hostages unlocks new pathways and is the fastest way to ease the Middle East crisis,” he said.
Some marchers held images of Evyatar David, the 24-year-old shown weak and emaciated in a recent Hamas video. Others warned that the UK’s “bungled” policy announcements only strengthen Hamas’s position.
Security and Counter-Protests
Small scuffles broke out near Trafalgar Square when a few pro-Palestinian demonstrators clashed briefly with police. One man was arrested for common assault and a racially aggravated public order offence.
A strong security presence, including police and Jewish safety groups, monitored the event amid concerns over rising antisemitic incidents in Britain since 7 October. Protesters carried signs reading “End Jew Hatred” and voiced fears for their safety.

Of the estimated 50 hostages taken, about 20 are believed to still be alive, according to campaigners. Since the Hamas-led attacks, more than 61,000 people have died in Gaza from Israeli military operations, the health ministry reports.
Protesters urged the UK to prioritise freeing hostages over conditional recognition of a Palestinian state, warning current policy risks empowering Hamas.
