Crystal Palace fans had no intent to disrupt minute's silence, says Arne Slot

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said Crystal Palace supporters did not intend to interrupt the tribute to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva before the Community Shield at Wembley.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said he does not believe Crystal Palace fans meant to interrupt the minute of silence for Diogo Jota and Andre Silva at the Community Shield.

Before Sunday’s match at Wembley, referee Chris Kavanagh ended the tribute seconds early after supporters in the east end booed. Jota, 28, and his brother Silva, 25, died in a car crash in northern Spain last month.

Misplaced cheers, not malice

After Liverpool’s 3-2 penalty shootout loss, Slot told reporters he thought the noise was an accidental cheer. “I don’t think this was planned,” he said. “Maybe a fan was so happy he forgot it was the minute’s silence. Others then tried to calm him, which added to the noise, and our fans reacted.”

Community Shield highlights

Palace twice came from behind to draw 2-2 in regulation before goalkeeper Dean Henderson saved two spot-kicks in the shootout. Notably, Jeremie Frimpong’s 20:20 goal marked the number Jota wore at Anfield, a moment commentator Darren Fletcher called “incredible.” Liverpool have since retired the No.20 shirt in his honour.

Slot stressed the disruption was unintentional and the wider fanbase had shown deep respect for the late Jota and Silva.
